While the name debate with this lake is amusing, I truly have no opinion. The map I saw says Cecret but the USGS says Secret, so who knows. All of that nonsense aside the first time I went to Cecret lake was in August when the wild flowers are blooming and absolutely breath taking.
Cecret lake is another really popular hike, and as with all popular destinations parking can be a nightmare. There is a shuttle that will take you to the base of the trail and donations are greatly appreciated. The shuttle is run by the town of Alta and runs every twenty minutes through the day, weather permitting of course. You can drive up on your own but I highly recommend not taking your personal vehicle up this road if you can avoid it.
The Cecret lake trail is not terribly difficult however it is a little more strenuous at the end. Like donut falls I have seen every age group on this trail and everyone makes it. There is a short series of switch backs at the very end that may test your abilities slightly but nothing terrible. I have hiked it both with and without my brace and while it was a little more exhausting without my brace I still enjoyed myself.
The second time we went to Cecret lake was a little more than a month later (we wanted the kids to see it)., and there was a big difference. The wild flowers were not nearly as bright and all of the snow was gone. We did however find a moose laying next to the lake (which was neat). There is something magical about the Mountains when the fall is coming. While gloomy to a point it almost seems like they are getting ready for bed. Just like humans the mountains shed all of the pretty and unnecessary when it's time to settle in for a good rest.
Cecret lake, while small, attracts quite the crowd. Everyone from hikers, to rock climbers to families on a casual stroll seem to love this destination. What's odd is that until I started writing this I had never paid attention to the elevation of Cecret lake. Turns out it's pretty high up there. I live at right around 4,200 feet so I'm used to everything being a high elevation if it's within a quick drive from my house, but I was surprised that Cecret lake is close to 10,000 feet.
So my quick disclaimer is take plenty of water, plenty of time and plenty of friends and family and then go see Cecret or Secret lake. You will not be disappointed at any time, but I highly recommend August when the wild flowers bloom 🙂
